Younger Kids

If your child is between the ages of 4 and 8, weighs at least 40 pounds and is less than 4’9” tall, your child should be riding in a forward facing belt positioning booster seat. Two types of belt positioning booster seats are available:
  1. Base only with no back.
  2. High back booster seat that consists of a base and a back.
Where the rear seat in your vehicle is equipped with a head restraint, either style booster seat can be used so long as it is positioned and used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions provided with the booster seat. Where the rear seat of your vehicle is not equipped with a head restraint, you must use a high back booster seat in order to assure proper head support for your child in the event of a crash.

High back booster seats often are also sold with an adjustable harness. This allows the seats to first be used as a toddler seat. Once the child is too old for the toddler seat, the harness can be removed and the seat can then be used as a high back booster seat.
